Chase and Stephanie Coleman Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Chase and Stephanie Coleman Foundation does most of its grantmaking in New York and prioritizes education and health. The foundation does not have a website, and provides no clear guidelines for grantseekers.

FUNDING AREAS: Education, Medical, Community, Environment, Humanitarian

IP TAKE: The foundation had $51.7 million in assets and gave nearly $10 million to local organizations in 2015. The foundation does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals.

PROFILE: The Chase and Stephanie Coleman Foundation’s philanthropy prioritizes grantmaking in New York City. Established by Case Coleman III, a descendent of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch governor of New York. Chase oversees Tiger Global Management, a hedge fund. Tax filings suggest that the foundation invests in education, medical, community, the environment, and humanitarian issues.

Coleman’s education investments include the East Harlem School, Inner-City Scholarship Fund, KIPP NY, IMentor, and Teach for America. Its grantmaking to health, however, includes the Hospital of Special Surgery, New-York Presbyterian Hospital, and Memorial Sloan Kettering.

While most of the foundation’s funding supports education and health grantees, Coleman has supported the Central Park Conservatory, React to Film, and the Fresh Air Fund.

Unfortunately, given Coleman’s lack of a web presence, little further information exists for applicants. To learn more and to attract its grantmaking, grantseekers are encouraged to network with the foundation.
