OVERVIEW: Brother, Help Thyself awards grants to LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS organizations in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area.

PROFILE: The BHT Foundation, formerly Brother, Help Thyself, was established in 1978 when four gay motorcycle clubs in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore region banded together to support “LGBTQ/SGL health, cultural, and social services,” becoming one of the first philanthropic organizations of its kind in the U.S. The foundation has remained true to its original cause and continues to support LGBTQ organizations involved in health, social services and arts and culture in the Mid-Atlantic region.

BHT’s grantmaking targets LGBTQ organizations that “[s]how a potential for strong community impact.” Recent grantees include AIDS Action Baltimore, D.C. Different Drummers and the Frederick Center, which supports and advocates for LGBTQ individuals and families in Maryland.

BHT’s grantmaking totaled about $36,000 in a recent year. Grants range from $100 to $5,000 and generally go to small, community-based groups in Washington, D.C., Maryland and the greater Mid-Atlantic area. For additional information on past grantmaking, see the foundation’s impact page.
