PROFILE: The Avangrid Foundation is the corporate giving arm of Avangrid, Inc., an energy and utility company based in Orange, Connecticut. The foundation began its community outreach efforts in 2001. Like many corporate funders, Avangrid gives back to the communities where its employees live and work. The company has approximately $32 billion in assets and operates in 27 states through Connecticut Natural Gas, New York State Electric and Gas, Southern Connecticut Gas, and other companies. The Avangrid Foundation supports  energy sustainability, the environment, art and culture, and cooperation and solidarity.

Avangrid's sustainability and biodiversity program focuses on protecting the environment and meeting energy needs in an effective way. Past grantees include Greentopia’s Alternative Fuel Vehicle Show, which features speakers, green vendors, a kids’ zone, and recycled fashion. Arts and culture is also an interest, especially programs that preserve diversity and uniqueness in artistic creations.

The foundation's arts and culture grantmaking has invested in the Borinquen Dance Theater, which is a dance group that blends Latin contemporary and Puerto Rican folk dancing and travels all over the U.S.

Avangrid also provides funding in the category of cooperation and solidarity to support the quality of life for disadvantaged populations in areas where the company operates. For example, Avangrid has supported Camp Sunshine, a camp that helps kids with life-threatening conditions and their families.

The foundation's grantmaking prioritizes the Tri-State Area and its home state of Connecticut. It funds both small and grassroots organizations with which its employees are familiar and involved. In addition to the past grantees noted above, this corporate funder has funded human services and basic needs causes, such as the Connecticut Food Bank. It has given grant money to the Red Cross for disaster preparedness, STEM education programs for girls, and museums as well. In addition to grants, this foundation also awards scholarships to students who are pursuing Master of Science degrees in energy and the environment.

The foundation does not provide any grantseeker guidelines or deadlines to guide nonprofits looking to receive support. It is run by a board consisting of seven members.
