OVERVIEW: The Archstone Foundation’s mental health grants focus on depression in older adults.

IP TAKE: Archstone has recently supported large collaborative projects in the area of late-life depression. Its grantmaking is concentrated in California and the West Coast. In addition to its larger grants, this funder periodically posts RFPs for additional projects in the are of mental health on its website. Grantseekers may also sign up for updates via the foundation’s newsletter. Grants generally range from $50,000 to $375,000.

PROFILE: Created in 1985, the Archstone Foundation prioritizes the needs of older adults and seeks “to focus exclusively on issues related to aging to build synergies among its grantees and increase the measurable impact of its funding.” Its mental health grantmaking addresses quality-of-life improvements for older adults with depression. As well, it funds caregiving support.

According to the foundation, around one in five older adults suffers from depression, which often leads to other health problems. Unfortunately, many older adults with depression do not get the treatment they need, particularly minorities, older men, poor people and those with multiple medical problems. Launched in 2014, Archstone’s Depression in Late-Life program centers on research and mental health services for adults over the age of 65. In recent years, the foundation has supported a collaborative project, Care Partners: Bridging Families, Clinics and Communities to Advance Late-Life Depression Care, and made over $2 million in grants to participating organizations including the University of California Davis, the University of Washington and Kaiser Permanente of Southern California.

Archstone’s grantmaking totals around $5 million annually. Grants typically range from $50,000 to $375,000. This funder tends to provide ongoing support to major players in mental health and prioritizes California and the West Coast. For additional information about past grantmaking, see the foundation’s grants database.

The Archstone Foundation accepts grant proposals by invitation only but posts RFPs from time to time on its Capacity Building and Innovations page. Interested grantseekers should consult the foundation’s website periodically and subscribe to its newsletter for updates.
