25-40 Foundation: Grants for Global Health

OVERVIEW: The 25-40 Foundation focuses its global health grantmaking on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Geographically, the foundation appears to prioritize sub-Saharan Africa.

IP TAKE: 25-40 supports both small and large international water and sanitation organizations. Large organizations often receive support for several years; however, new, smaller organizations appear on its rosters each year. The 25-40 Foundation maintains a low public profile, does not employ formal staff, or does not operate a website.

PROFILE: Located in Bellingham, Washington, the 25-40 Foundation is a modest funder of global health projects. It supports projects related to water, sanitation, and hygiene, or WASH.

Geographically, the foundation focuses on Africa, particularly sub-Saharan African countries such as Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia, among others. On the rare occasion, it awards WASH grants to support projects in other least developed countries around the world, such as Haiti.

With assets that range from about $8 million to $10 million, the foundation makes only a handful of grants annually - about 10 to 15. Grants range from $10,000 to $150,000.

Additionally, the foundation does not accept unsolicited requests for funding or grant applications. Instead, it prefers to proactively seek organizations it would like to support.
